Welcome to Downtown Midtown

As two of Houston’s most accessible and walkable neighborhoods, living in Midtown or Downtown will make you feel like you possess the keys to the city. Located southwest of Downtown and separated from it by Interstate 45, Midtown’s affordability, cultural attractions, and culinary scene have caused the number of residents moving there to double in the past few years. Then, there’s Downtown. Literally in the dead center of H-Town, this part of the city hosts every major event you can catch on your TV screen, including the NBA All-Star Game and the Super Bowl. This neighborhood’s skyscraper-filled streets also mark its status as the business and commercial center of the Lone Star State’s biggest city. Both areas remain perpetual favorites amongst locals for a night out on the town due to their abundance of charming cocktail bars, whimsical coffee shops, retail shopping hot spots, performance venues, and nightlife destinations.

Neighborhood Vibe

From the lemon bundt cakes at The Baker’s Man to the table-side-made banana foster at Brennan’s of Houston, a sweet start to any weekend morning in Midtown awaits. This area’s residents can also enjoy some plentiful greenery amidst the urban setting by taking a walk or bike ride at one of the three large parks found in the district.

Downtown’s bustling nature is reflected in its equally vibrant entertainment scene. Residents can catch an Astros baseball game or the Rockets playing basketball, as well as productions from the Houston Symphony or Houston Ballet company.

Our Favorite Spots

The heart of Midtown, known as Mid Main, stretches between the 3500-3700 blocks of the neighborhood’s Main Street. Whether you prefer to browse for vinyl records at Sig’s Lagoon or search for vintage cowboy boots at My Flaming Heart, plenty of unique boutiques line the street along Mid Main. After your credit card cardio, you can recharge with a margarita at Tacos A Go Go.

And Downtown’s famed Theater District is a must for any arts buff. The Hobby Center for the Performing Arts, just one highlight in the area, serves as a stop for many touring Broadway musical productions.

Things to Know

As public transportation hubs, Midtown and Downtown represent two of the rare exceptions among Houston neighborhoods where a car is not necessary. In fact, Downtown has its own dedicated bus system, the Greenlink, which stops exclusively at points throughout the area. The red line on Houston’s light-rail network, the METRORail, connects Midtown with popular destinations around the city. When it comes to finding a home, Midtown contains plenty of different real estate options, including luxury apartments, condos, townhouses, and single-family homes. In contrast, Downtown, which is composed primarily of high-rise apartments, gives off a more traditional urban feel.
